[Watching Movies with the Sound Off], 그리고 [Faces] 통해 많은 관심과 사랑을 받았는데요올해 9월에는 [GO:OD A.M.]

Our special guest is Mac Miller. After launching onto the scene with 2011’s [Blue Slide Park], the first independently released album to reach number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts since 1995, Pittsburg’s Mac Miller has become one of music’s most dynamic and sought after talents. His follow-up albums and mixtapes including [Watching Movies with the Sound Off] and [Faces] garnered him massive critical acclaim as well as hundreds of hits on Youtube and beyond. Now Mac is back with a full length album [GO:OD A.M.] Thanks for coming, explain the title GO:OD A.M.

Thanks for having me. I think for me I wanted the album to feel like a breath of fresh air. A lot of the music I have done recently was a little darker and sad, depressing if you will. I wanted this album to be a departure from that.

So is it like uplifting songs?

Some of them. I wouldn’t use the term uplifting, maybe just more confident and positive.

It’s your first with a major label. Tell me how that came about. Sure an independent guy.

Yea, I’d like to think I kept all of my independence. I’m blessed to have a built a foundation on my own but I think it was just time. I don’t know if I’d be sitting here.

Oh, we would have had you on. So you signed with Warner, right?

Yea, they’re a very independent thinking company. Everyone at the office wears t-shirts, I haven’t seen many suits.

Does that mean you’re willing to do more commercial with your music?

I’m just going to keep on making music that I like to make, if it then has more commercial appeal, then maybe it will work that way. But music in general right now is kind of shadowing away with an emphasis on a single, and people are putting out art as a whole and it’s working, which is great. So you don’t have to focus on trying to get on a radio.

You don’t? How do you get heard then?

There’s the internet. And the radio is still a very real thing and it’s big, but now what I’ve done and so many people build a strong fan base that follow you everywhere. It’s less focused on just having radio single.

Does Warner promote you more?

Yea, it’s the first time I had a real budget to work with which is nice. Actually being able to have cool marketing ideas and see them happen. Like I’m going to get on a billboard.

Given the state of the industry, can an artist sustain success working with a small label or staying independent?

Yea, I think the system for what success is varies from person to person. There’s some people who want to have 10 million singles sold and that’s what they look at success as.

What do you look at?

For me, it’s being able to touch and affect people in a positive way. And have music that last for a long time, have a long career. Being able to be influential in a positive way.

There were darker tides for you, like your last tape [Faces]. Did you have a problem with life?

[Faces Mixtape]:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgUToB8PFao

I had a drug problem for a long time. I was definitely going through a drug problem and I think it was more of my state of mind, I was pretty depressed.

Even when successful?

Yea, I think it started.

With success?

It’s funny because people say “What do you have to be depressed about? You have money.” I was 18, 19 years old, and I think that moment in someone’s life where they’re trying to figure out who they are is just magnified and becomes a bigger thing. Fame is tricky because you read what’s said about you, and the lines start to blur. I just went through a long period when I didn’t wake up very happy.

Explain something to me. When someone says a rapper is coming through the door, I didn’t expect to see a white Jewish kid. How did you get into this culture?

It’s just something I love to do. I remember being younger, I grew up in Pittsburgh and there were always freestyle competitions and it’s just something I loved to do. And I didn’t see it as weird.

What did your parents think?

They are very supportive of me being creative. I was always in music since I was 6, my mom’s a photographer and my dad’s an architect, so as long as I finish school, they were really supportive.

Brothers or sisters?

I have a brother, he was very supportive. My brother actually does all my visual art, he’s an incredible artist. He does all my design of the covers and put together the packaging.

How did Mac Miller get known?

There was a moment in time right before the internet became oversaturated with music, so I kind of hit that pocket. I was putting together high-quality videos on Youtube and I released a song called “Donald Trump.” I never met him, we’ve had some issues, which I think is so cool. That song was my first platinum song so I did an interview where someone asked me if I support Donald Trump, and I didn’t agree with anything he said.

How did you adjust to fame? Was it tough?

You go through a period. At first, it’s really exciting when somebody says “aren’t you Mac Miller?” And then I went through a period where I rejected it and stayed inside. That was the dark days. But then you just own it.

What about these aliases? One of them is Larry Fisherman and another one is Delusional Thomas. Why do you need aliases?

I like to create characters and flash them out all the way. Delusional Thomas is a psychopathic murderer, and Larry Fisherman represents the studio rat in me, the person who never sees the light of the day and sits at work.

If You Only Knew <Q&A 코너

Best piece of advice you ever got?

Loop, swoop, and pull. How to tie your shoes.

Favorite thing to do on a day off?

Take a nice walk and contemplate the deeper things in life.

Can you talk about your tattoos and the one that has the most meaning for you?

I have one on my back of my grandpa who passed away, and on my fingers, which is my crew/family.

What’s your favorite song on the new album?

맥 밀러: “Break the Law” 아님 “Doors.”

“Break the Law” or “Doors.”

Do you think an openly gay rap or hip hop star could make it big?

Yea, I think it’s about the art. If you’re gay, straight, whatever color you are.

Do you write a lot? All the time?

Yea, not all the time. I write it on my phone a lot or keep it up all here. A lot of times in the car. I used to have a studio at my house but most of my best ideas come on my way there.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years, Mac?

Hopefully doing a lot of different things in entertainment. Maybe have a kid.

You’re going to be bigger than you are now. Much bigger.

That’s what I hope.

I predict it for you.

Mac Miller (1992-2018)

Rest in peace.
